Supplies for Classes & Workshops

Supplies may be purchased from Jerry's Art-a-rama, A.C. Moore and Michael's Arts and Crafts.

Drawing for the Realistically Challenged

Paper – white paper suitable for graphite and charcoal

Vine Charcoal (also called Willow charcoal) - thin

Compressed Charcoal (pencil or stick) – one each soft, medium and hard

White “charcoal” – for drawing highlight on colored paper

Graphite pencils – three graphite pencils, choose a range to include hard (H), medium and soft (B)

Pencil sharpener – small and portable

Kneaded eraser

White plastic eraser

Blending stomp (also called tortillon)

Paper towels

Sand paper

Drawing board larger than the size of paper you will draw on (can be a piece of wood, foam core or very stiff cardboard that won’t bend)

Masking tape

10” ruler or yard stick

Painting from Grid to Realism Materials List

Basic set of oils – Choose either regular oils or water soluble, according to what you want to spend.  If you prefer to purchase paints individually, buy the following: Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow Medium Hue, Cadmium Orange Hue, Cadmium Red Hue, Alizarin Crimson, French Ultramarine, Cobalt Blue, Phthalo Green (Blue Shade) or Viridian Green, Sap Green (optional)

Stretched Canvas – 3/4 or 1.5 inch depth, between 11x14 and 16 x 20 in size to start with. Do not being canvas pads or canvas boards

Brushes – Bristle brushes suitable for oil painting.  Buy a set that contains a variety of sizes and shapes (e.g. Studio Line by Creative Mark) OR 3-4 sizes of filberts between sizes #3 and #10 and 2 rounds between sizes #1 and #10.

Disposable paper palette – 9”x12” fits the Painter’s Pal Palette, 12x16” fits the Artist’s Palette Seal

Masterson brand air tight palette – either Artist’s Palette Seal or Painter’s Pal Palette is fine (Do not get the Stay-wet Premier Palette or the Stay-wet disposable palettes.  Those are for acrylics).

Odorless Mineral Spirits – (if using regular oils) purchase artist quality such as Gamblin or Mona Lisa Brand.  Do not bring mineral spirits from the hardware store, turpenoid or turpentine.

 

Roll of paper towels

Solvent container – (if using regular oils) You may purchase containers designed to hold solvents or use a jar with a tight fitting lid.  Plastic jars are preferred if they are good quality (e.g. peanut butter jar) because glass jars can break.

Water container – (if using water soluble oils) a plastic container such as a Cool Whip container

A collection of photos that you would like to use as subject matter for your painting –simple compositions – no portraits.

 

Optional –

Clorox type wipes– great for clean up and getting paint off of hands, tables, etc

Easel – light weight, portable, the center should have some available to use during class

Acetate –an old report cover, or acetate by the sheet or pad

Sharpie Marker – any color, thin line
